How Often Should You Replaster Your Pool? Signs It's Time

General Replastering Timelines

How long your pool plaster lasts depends primarily on the type of finish, your water chemistry, and environmental factors. Here are general guidelines:

  • Standard Plaster: 5-10 years
  • Quartz: 8-12 years
  • Mini/Micro Pebble: 10-20 years
  • Polished Marble: 15-25+ years

These ranges assume reasonable water chemistry maintenance. Poor chemical balance can dramatically shorten the life of any finish.

Signs Your Pool Needs Replastering

Don't wait until your pool is in critical condition. Watch for these warning signs:

Visible Staining

Persistent stains that won't respond to chemical treatment or professional cleaning indicate that the plaster surface has become porous and is absorbing minerals. This is one of the earliest and most common signs.

Rough or Peeling Surface

When you run your hand along the pool walls and floor and feel rough patches, divots, or areas where the plaster is flaking off, it's a clear sign the finish is deteriorating. This can also cause skin irritation for swimmers.

Exposed Gunite or Aggregate

If you can see the concrete shell (gunite) beneath the plaster, or if aggregate is coming loose from a pebble finish, the protective layer has worn through and needs replacement.

Persistent Water Chemistry Problems

Old, deteriorating plaster can cause ongoing water chemistry issues. If you find yourself constantly fighting pH imbalances, calcium hardness problems, or algae despite proper chemical management, worn plaster may be the culprit.

Age

If your pool is approaching or past the expected lifespan for its finish type, proactive replastering can prevent more serious (and expensive) structural issues.

Factors That Shorten Plaster Life

  • Consistently imbalanced water chemistry (low pH, low calcium)
  • Aggressive chemical treatments
  • Hard water with high mineral content
  • Heavy use or commercial settings
  • Harsh weather and UV exposure

The Cost of Waiting Too Long

Delaying replastering doesn't just affect aesthetics — severely deteriorated plaster can lead to structural issues, including water seepage through the pool shell. Catching the signs early means a straightforward replaster job. Waiting too long can mean more extensive (and expensive) repairs.
