When sunlight enters the water and hits the plaster surface, it reflects back through the water column. The color, texture, and reflectivity of that plaster surface determines what color your eyes perceive.
White and Light Plaster
Classic white plaster produces the light, bright blue water color that most people picture when they think of a swimming pool. The lighter the plaster, the more light reflects back through the water, creating that crystal-clear, inviting blue. Light-colored plaster also makes it easier to see debris and monitor water clarity.
Medium Tones (Gray, Tan, Blue)
Medium-toned plaster finishes create deeper, richer water colors. Gray plaster produces a sophisticated, deeper blue that mimics ocean water. Tan and sand tones create a more natural, lagoon-like appearance with green-blue hues. Blue-tinted plaster intensifies the blue color, creating a vivid, jewel-toned pool.
Dark Finishes (Charcoal, Black, Dark Blue)
Dark plaster finishes create the most dramatic water effects. Dark gray and black plaster absorb more light, giving the pool a deep, mirror-like quality that reflects the sky and surroundings. These finishes are stunning for modern and resort-style designs, creating a sophisticated, moody aesthetic.
How Aggregate Affects Color
Pebble and quartz finishes add another dimension to water color. The natural stone aggregates create subtle color variations and depth that plain plaster cannot achieve. A mini pebble finish in a medium tone, for example, produces a multi-tonal water color with beautiful depth as light refracts off the individual pebble surfaces.
Polished marble finishes create an almost glass-like reflective surface that produces the most vivid, uniform water color of any finish type.
